Goto Island Travel

島ならではの豊かな自然と歴史・文化
About 100km west of Nagasaki City. Goto City consists of 11 inhabited islands and 52 uninhabited islands, centered around Fukue Island, the largest island in the Goto Islands and the 10th largest in Japan. Goto City has the most inhabited islands in Japan, and traditional and diverse island life still thrives. These diverse islands are filled with beautiful seas and abundant nature, including cliffs carved by the rough waves of the East China Sea, crystal clear waters with table corals, and swimming beaches with white sand and emerald green waters, and you can enjoy fishing and marine sports throughout the year. Goto City is also famous as a producer of camellia oil, and many natural camellias, the raw material for the oil, grow wild in Goto City.
On the other hand, Nagasaki flourished as a hub of overseas trade as a port of call for envoys from the Tang Dynasty in the olden days, and is a place of Catholic faith with many churches scattered throughout. Furthermore, legends of the Wokou and Kukai remain, and the city is rich in historical and cultural heritage sites such as castles and samurai residences. In July 2018, the city was registered as a World Heritage Site as "Churches and Christian-related Sites of Nagasaki", as it was recognized as evidence of the unique cultural traditions of the Hidden Christians.
